Why you should always register your own domain name

DOMAIN.It is a part of a website's URL (Uniform Resource Locator)

What is a domain name?

Your domain name is your website’s address, it is one of the most important items in your small business toolbox. Without it it would be nearly impossible to locate your website.

We see it happen so many times and we spend a great deal of time assisting our clients in recovering their domain names. Sometimes with success and sometimes not. Eventually we can recover it but sometimes it is a waiting game.

If the domain is still registered to your previous dev, depending on the registrar sometimes you can regain access with proof of ownership and business documentation.

Unfortunately, most of the time your domain name will lapse in registration. It happens all too often and once expired, there is a grace period. Once the grace period is over the domain name is published to a list where anyone can purchase it.

Why would anyone want to buy my domain?

Our guess is that they assume you didn’t notice it expired and they bought it thinking you’d be willing to pay a premium to get it back.

This is why we always encourage you to purchase your own domain, or if we purchase it for you we will always push the registration to your own account.

If you don’t own your domain there’s no telling what might happen to your website.
